Here is something that I observe quite a bit.
And it is really remarkable.
So many of us, are very, very comfortable ….. And totally unhappy.
We would like our businesses, our careers, our relationships to be better. But then we only go after these things half-heartedly.
Why?
Because we engage in self-sabotaging thinking.
You. Me. Us. We all are guilty of this.
A client of mine, makes about $95 000 a year (not bad in today’s economy), and he tells me that he would like to get to $250 000.
Maybe even more.
Pushed as to what is stopping him from earning his dream income, this is what he told me. “But my family is important, too. And my health. I don’t want to have to work 80 hours a week. Or compromise my integrity.”
Most of us are guilty of this.
We assume that in order to thrive in our businesses, in our careers, and in our lives, we have to somehow compromise our values.
Yet we never assume that we CAN make $250 000 AND still have time for our loved ones, our family, for going to the gym and for looking after our health.
And yet there are many people earning $250 000 who still have great work-life balance.
Many of them my clients.
But why not him? Or you?
Here’s why: Because when we can’t see HOW to do it. We then assume that we can’t.
Its ridiculous, and yet it is the way most of us have been programmed to think.
We mix up the means and ends; the what and the how.
We give up on a dream if we can’t see a paint-by-numbers path to get there.
But it’s not how the people you respect and admire think.
The successful leaders, entrepreneurs that I work with first ask “Why and What?” And then they ask “How?”
That’s Accurate Thinking.
And Accurate Thinking is really the fastest way to getting what you want.
If the Why and the What are strong, they’ll figure out the How along the way.
But for average folk… If the How isn’t crystal clear at the start, they’ll abandon the Why and the What…!
Which is why we call it tail-wagging-the-dog thinking.
Back to the consultant making $95,000 who wants to grow to $250,000.
There’s something comfortable about limiting yourself to goals you think you know how to achieve.
Yeah, it’s comfortable. But that’s also the recipe for stagnation.
So many people are comfortable, but unhappy because they’re stagnating.
Stagnation happens when you choose the illusion of security, rather than moving forward in the face of uncertainty.
Which is why stagnation is like being one of the living dead.
To be ALIVE means that you first dream a dream. And then you pursue it.
Even though you will have to take risks. Even though you won’t know HOW you’ll get there.
It means you’ll need to spend money, invest time, be vulnerable… all before you know for sure that the money, time and relationships will ‘pay off.’
Nothing is certain. And nothing lasts forever. Not the hardships, nor the good times.
Except this one thing is certain: If you’re making your life decisions based on tail-wagging-the-dog thinking, (pursuing what you think you can have vs. going after what you really want) you’re setting yourself up for lots of regrets.
