How long should you try is a great question.
There certainly is a fine line between knowing when to give up and knowing when to keep going.
My sense is that it is almost always better to err on the side of keep going.
Most people give up way too soon.
I have a coaching term I refer to as “The Quitting Zone.”
People will go so far and then turn back.
One of the mantras I repeat to myself is “Never give up.”
I have lived by this for years and it has served me well.
Not that I always achieved what I went after, but I have always gotten farther than I would have had I given up.
There are times when the path to what I want leads me to something even better than I could have imagined.
In my experience it isn’t that people go too far, it’s that they don’t go far enough.
Usually it will get the toughest right before things break loose.
We have to learn to persevere beyond the quitting zone.
Persistence isn’t easy, but I have noticed that when I want to give up the most is when I should push forward the hardest.
Achieving what you want takes time, energy and courage.
It means striving and struggling even when it doesn’t make sense and others tell you to give up.
There are times when quitting may be the thing to do, but I can assure you no one has ever achieved their goals by giving up.
Quitting is the last resort. Pushing through is the challenge, and achieving your goals is the reward.
And Remember :
Giving up + Goal = Last resort
Is there a goal you are considering giving up on?
Before you do, ask yourself one question, “At the end of my life will I regret failing to achieve it?” If the answer is yes, then you know what to do. Don’t give up.
